How long do SEO and AI visibility take for a SaaS company?

The Rank Master editorial team

There is no single answer to how long SEO takes for a SaaS company, because four clocks run at once and each keeps its own time. A technical fix counts from the next time Google crawls the page, and Google puts a recrawl at between a few days and a few weeks. A new page has to be discovered and indexed before it can rank or be quoted, and we plan on six to twelve weeks for one to settle. Google rankings on buying terms take months, and Google suggests giving any single change a few weeks before you judge it. AI citations from an engine's search cannot start until its search crawler can reach and index the page, and the mentions on other people's pages that shape an AI shortlist build up later: we plan for citations to compound from month three. Judge the whole programme over two quarters, with checkpoints at months 1, 3 and 6.

Google's guidance on hiring an SEO gives no timeline at all. It tells you to ask any candidate what results to expect and by when, and it is blunt about the limit: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." Our guide to choosing an SEO and AEO agency for B2B SaaS turns that advice into checks you can run before you sign.

If you want those checkpoints agreed before any work starts, book a 30-minute call. The Rank Master gets B2B SaaS companies found in Google and recommended by the seven AI engines buyers now ask first, and the month 1, 3 and 6 checkpoints on this page are the ones we agree up front.

The four clocks at a glance

Each clock starts at a different moment and has its own reasons to run slow. The official statements come from the engines' own documentation, read on 17 October 2026; the planning ranges are the ones we publish on our own site.

Clock It starts when What the official documentation says Our planning range What usually slows it
Technical fixes The fix ships and the page is recrawled Google: a recrawl takes a few days to a few weeks Can move things within weeks Fixes waiting in a developer's queue
New pages The page is published and found IndexNow: waiting for a routine crawl, engines can need days or weeks to notice a change Six to twelve weeks to settle Slow approvals and long legal review
Google rankings Indexed pages compete for a query Google: some changes show within hours, others take several months Judged over two quarters, not two weeks Strong pages that already answer the query
AI citations An engine can reach, index and quote the page OpenAI: about 24 hours for a robots.txt change to reach its search; Perplexity: up to 24 hours; Google's AI features draw on indexed pages Citations compound from month three Blocked crawlers, and no mentions on the pages engines quote

1. Technical fixes: counted from the next crawl

A technical fix, such as a repaired redirect, a page made indexable again or a crawler let back in, does nothing until the engines see the corrected page. For Google, that means a recrawl. Google's recrawl documentation (last updated 10 December 2025) puts crawling at between a few days and a few weeks, caps how many individual URLs you can submit, and points out that asking for the same URL again does not move it up the queue. Google's AI features guidance points to the URL Inspection tool in Search Console for seeing the HTML Googlebot actually received, so you can confirm a fix landed before you wait for it to count.

Our planning range is that technical fixes can move things within weeks. That is why every Rank Master plan opens with a full technical audit in week one, with the fixes ranked by what they are worth. This clock runs slow when a fix sits in a developer's sprint for a month, and it never starts if nobody ships the fix.

2. New pages: found, indexed, then settled

A new comparison, alternatives or use-case page has to be discovered and indexed before it can rank or be cited. IndexNow exists because engines do not revisit every URL often: its site says an engine waiting for a routine crawl can need days or weeks to notice changed content. Microsoft Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep support it. Google is not on that list, so for Google the routes are internal links, a sitemap and Search Console. Google's sitemap guidance names a new site with few links pointing at it as one case where Googlebot may miss pages, and is clear that listing a URL in a sitemap does not ensure it gets crawled or indexed.

An indexed page still has to find its level, and we plan on six to twelve weeks for a new page to settle. Approvals stretch this clock far more often than strategy does. We ask each client for one person who can approve a page within a few days, and a site where nothing can go live without six weeks of legal review adds those six weeks to every page it publishes.

3. Google rankings: months, judged every few weeks

Rankings on the terms buyers use near the end of an evaluation usually take longest, because a new page has to displace pages that already answer the query well. Google's SEO Starter Guide (last updated 10 December 2025) says some changes register within a few hours while others take several months, recommends allowing a few weeks before you assess a change, and warns that not every change makes a visible difference.

That is the case for judging the work over two quarters rather than two weeks. It is also why a Rank Master programme starts with a 90-day initial term: nothing meaningful can be judged in less. After that it runs month to month with 30 days' notice.

4. AI citations: access first, then earned mentions

This clock has two parts, and only the first is quick.

Access. An engine's search can only quote a page its search crawler can reach, so the first check is which AI crawlers your robots.txt lets in. OpenAI says ChatGPT's search answers leave out sites that block OAI-SearchBot, and that a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to reach its search systems. Perplexity asks site owners to allow PerplexityBot and allows up to 24 hours for a robots.txt change to apply. Anthropic says blocking Claude-SearchBot keeps your content out of the index behind Claude's search. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode ask for nothing extra: Google's AI features guidance says a page is eligible to appear as a supporting link if it is indexed and can be shown with a snippet, and it lists making sure robots.txt and any CDN or hosting layer allow crawling among the basics. For those two, the Google clock is the AI clock.

Earned mentions. Being reachable is not the same as being recommended. When a buyer asks for a shortlist, the engines lean on pages other people publish: roundups, review sites and comparison articles. Getting onto those takes outreach, an editor's schedule and then a crawl of the editor's page, so we plan for citations to compound from month three. How to find those pages and earn a place on them is covered in how to get your SaaS featured in the lists AI engines quote.

None of the documentation we read from OpenAI, Perplexity, Anthropic or Google gives a timeline for when a page starts being cited.

What months 1, 3 and 6 should show

These are the checkpoints we agree up front, before work starts, as published in our measurement section. They are what we hold the work to at each point, not a guarantee: our terms say nobody can guarantee a ranking, a citation or a mention, and we do not.

Checkpoint What the work should have delivered What you can check yourself
Month 1 A baseline across all seven engines; technical blockers found and ranked; the first revenue pages live Whether the new pages are indexed, using URL Inspection in Search Console; a saved record of what each engine answers today for your buying questions
Month 3 Measurable movement on target buying queries; the first earned citations indexed and quoted; answer share against named rivals charted Search Console's performance report for those queries, and its generative AI report for impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode; the same buying questions, asked again
Month 6 Answer share on your core category prompts, engine by engine against named rivals; each revenue page tied to the demo requests it assisted, in your own analytics; a citation map of the pages engines quote for your category and where you appear on them Assisted demo requests in your own analytics; the pages each engine cites for your category, and whether they mention you

The seven engines are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. For the two Google features, Search Console's generative AI performance reports, available to all sites since 31 August 2026, count the impressions your URLs earned in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. For the rest, asking the same questions on a fixed schedule and recording who is named is the method set out in how to measure brand visibility in ChatGPT and AI answers.

Method: where these timings come from

The official statements come from the engines' own documentation, read on 17 October 2026: Google Search Central's page on hiring an SEO (last updated 5 June 2026); its SEO Starter Guide and its pages on recrawls, sitemaps and AI features (each last updated 10 December 2025); Google's announcement of the generative AI performance reports, dated 3 June 2026; OpenAI's and Perplexity's crawler documentation; Anthropic's article on its crawlers; and indexnow.org. Where a page gives a range, we report the whole range rather than a midpoint.

The planning ranges and checkpoints are The Rank Master's own, taken from the FAQ, measurement and fit-check sections of our site. They are what we plan around and agree up front. They are not results we are claiming for anyone.

When this timeline is the wrong fit

If you need pipeline inside thirty days, paid search is the honest answer: SEO and AI visibility compound, and compounding work is slow before it is fast. Our fit check makes the same point from the other side. We are a good fit for a team judging the work over two quarters, not two weeks, and not for one that needs pipeline this month.
