How to get cited by ChatGPT: a guide for B2B SaaS teams

The Rank Master editorial team

ChatGPT cites a page when it searches the web to answer, and its search answers only show sites that let OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, in. So the first job is access: allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and let OpenAI's published IP addresses through your CDN or firewall. GPTBot is a separate switch that only covers model training, and ChatGPT-User visits a page only when a user's request calls for it. After access, the job is to be the page that ChatGPT's rewritten searches return for your buyers' questions (a comparison page, a public pricing page, open documentation, a complete review-site listing) and to test those questions in ChatGPT, reading the sources it shows.

The Rank Master does this for B2B SaaS teams across ChatGPT and the six other engines buyers ask first, with published pricing and no annual lock-in. Book a 30-minute call to go through your category.

A citation is a linked source attached to an answer. OpenAI's help article on searching the web with ChatGPT describes them on answers that used web search: the reader can select a citation to open the source, point at it on desktop web to preview it, or open the Sources panel, which lists the cited pages together with other relevant links. A mention is your brand named in the answer text, linked or not. A recommendation is a mention as one of the picks for a buying question.

For a SaaS company, being recommended by ChatGPT is the commercial goal and the citation is how you earn it. The cited pages are the evidence ChatGPT used, so when your comparison page or your review-site listing is among them, you have a hand in how the answer describes you. The rest of this guide says "cited" for the linked source and "recommended" for being named as a pick; the work behind both is the same.

OpenAI's crawlers and what each one controls

OpenAI documents four agents on its crawler page, and each robots.txt setting works independently of the others.

Agent What OpenAI uses it for What blocking it does
OAI-SearchBot Finding pages to show in ChatGPT search results Your pages drop out of ChatGPT search answers, though a bare navigational link can still appear
GPTBot Gathering content that OpenAI may use to train its foundation models Tells OpenAI to leave your content out of training; search is a separate setting
ChatGPT-User Visiting a page when a user's request in ChatGPT or a custom GPT needs it Little: OpenAI says user-initiated visits may not follow robots.txt, and this agent plays no part in deciding search inclusion
OAI-AdsBot Safety checks on the landing pages of ads submitted to ChatGPT Matters only if you advertise: it only fetches pages that were submitted as ads, and OpenAI does not train on what it collects

The combination most SaaS marketing sites want is search on, training optional. OpenAI gives this exact pairing as its example: allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in search results and disallow GPTBot to stay out of training.

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

Whether to block GPTBot is a business decision more than a citation one. If your pages exist to be read and repeated, there is little to protect; if the content is the product, such as paid research or proprietary data, opting out of training is reasonable. If you allow both agents, OpenAI says it may use a single crawl for both purposes.

Three details from the same page matter when you check access:

  • After a robots.txt change, OpenAI says its search systems take about 24 hours to adjust.
  • OpenAI publishes the IP addresses each agent uses and recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot's, listed in searchbot.json. A firewall or bot-protection rule that blocks those addresses keeps you out even when robots.txt lets OAI-SearchBot in.
  • When it requests your robots.txt file, OAI-SearchBot may add a robots.txt marker to its user-agent string, which makes those requests easy to pick out in logs that do not record paths.

How ChatGPT search finds and shows sources

ChatGPT does not search for every prompt. OpenAI's help article says it may decide to search by itself when an up-to-date answer would help, and that users can force a search by choosing Search from the tools menu or by typing "/" in the message box. Web search is available on every plan OpenAI lists (Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu) and to people who are not signed in, so your buyers can reach it whatever they pay.

ChatGPT search sometimes draws on partner search providers, and when it does it usually does not send the buyer's words as typed: according to OpenAI, it turns the question into one or more sharper queries for the search providers it partners with, and may follow up with narrower ones once it has read the first results. A buyer asking which customer success platform suits a 40-person B2B SaaS company might set off searches about customer success platform pricing, options for small teams and named head-to-head comparisons. You are competing for those rewritten searches, so a set of pages that each answer one sub-question gives ChatGPT more to work with than one page that touches all of them. The same article points readers to Microsoft's privacy statement for how those providers handle queries. OpenAI does not name Bing, but we read that pointer as a sign that Microsoft's search is among them, so checking that your key pages are indexed in Bing is a cheap precaution.

On the reader's side, OpenAI's article warns that what search returns, citations included, can be partial, out of date or simply wrong, and tells readers to open the source and check its date. A vendor page with a visible last-updated date and current prices survives that check; a stale one sends the buyer somewhere else.

On ranking, OpenAI says only that it ranks results on a mix of factors aimed at relevance and reliability, and that no placement is guaranteed. The article does not list the factors.

Step by step: getting a B2B SaaS product cited

Step 1: Confirm OAI-SearchBot can reach your key pages

Read your robots.txt the way OAI-SearchBot will: under the robots.txt standard, RFC 9309, the rules under User-agent: * apply to it unless a group names it directly. Then look at the firewall or bot-protection settings, and search your server logs for OAI-SearchBot requests. Start with the pages you most want cited: pricing, comparisons, integrations and the product overview.

Step 2: List the prompts your buyers type

A dozen to twenty prompts is a workable start. For B2B SaaS they tend to fall into five kinds:

Prompt type Example The page that should answer it
Category pick "best [category] software for [segment]" A segment or use-case page, plus the roundups ChatGPT cites
Alternatives "[largest rival] alternatives" Your alternatives page and your review-site category listings
Head-to-head "[your product] vs [rival]" A comparison page with a feature and price table
Pricing "how much does [your product] cost" A public pricing page that states plan limits
Fit and integrations "does [your product] integrate with [tool]" An integration page or public documentation

Step 3: Run each prompt with search on and read the sources

Ask each prompt in ChatGPT with Search selected, so the answer is grounded in live results, then open the Sources panel. Record three things: whether your product is named, where it appears in the answer and which pages were cited. Run each prompt more than once, and on different days, before you read much into a single answer. The cited pages are your map: they show which third-party sites ChatGPT relies on for your category, and whether any page of yours is among them.

Step 4: Give ChatGPT a page worth citing for each prompt

Where a rival's page or a roundup is cited and yours is not, decide which of your pages should answer that prompt and make it specific. State prices with their limits, name the rivals you compare against, say who the product is not for, and date the page. Keep the facts in the page text rather than only in images or scripts. Our guide to SaaS alternatives and comparison pages sets out what each of those pages needs.

Step 5: Get onto the third-party pages ChatGPT already cites

If the Sources panel keeps showing the same review sites and roundups, those pages are doing the recommending. Complete your listings on the review sites, ask customers for reviews, and approach the authors of the roundups with accurate, current facts. The same sources tend to feed the other engines too, which is the subject of our guide to getting a SaaS product recommended by AI engines.

How ChatGPT referrals show up in analytics

Set up a segment in your analytics for sessions whose source is chatgpt.com, whether it arrives as the referrer or as a campaign tag. On the tag, OpenAI's publisher FAQ stated that ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends. That article now redirects to OpenAI's notice retiring ChatGPT Atlas (checked on 16 October 2026), so confirm the tag in your own data before you build reports on it.

Then follow those sessions to the actions that matter for a SaaS pipeline: demo requests, trial sign-ups and visits to the pricing page. Expect the numbers to understate ChatGPT's influence. An answer can name your product without linking to you, and the buyer may come back days later through a branded search or a direct visit. That is why the prompt checks in step 3 matter as much as the traffic report. For a fuller set-up, including how often ChatGPT names you against rivals, see how to measure brand visibility in ChatGPT.

Questions B2B SaaS teams ask about ChatGPT citations

Does blocking GPTBot remove a site from ChatGPT?

No. GPTBot only governs whether content may be used for training. Inclusion in ChatGPT search depends on OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI treats the two settings independently.

How long does a robots.txt change take to reach ChatGPT search?

About 24 hours, according to OpenAI's crawler documentation.

Can a page that blocks OAI-SearchBot still appear in ChatGPT?

Only in a limited way. OpenAI says an opted-out site is left out of ChatGPT search answers but may still show up as a navigational link.

Can you pay OpenAI to be cited or recommended?

Not through any route OpenAI documents. Its stated advertising principle is that ads "do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you" (OpenAI, 16 January 2026), and that ads are kept separate and labelled. An ad buys a labelled placement, not a place in the answer.

Does an llms.txt file help you get cited by ChatGPT?

Neither of the OpenAI pages that address site owners suggests so. The crawler page and the help article on web search give llms.txt no role in ChatGPT search; the only mention is a pointer to the index of OpenAI's own developer documentation (we read both pages on 16 October 2026). What OpenAI does document is letting OAI-SearchBot crawl the site and letting traffic from its published IP addresses through.

Do buyers need a paid plan to see ChatGPT's search results?

No. OpenAI lists web search on its Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, and for people who are not signed in.

If you want ChatGPT and the six other engines measured for your category, alongside a fixed number of revenue pages and earned citations each month, The Rank Master's published plans start at $2,000 a month, with custom programmes from $1,500. After a 90-day initial term the work runs month-to-month, and nothing publishes unreviewed. Book a 30-minute call.
